They are named after the capital city of Tibet which is Lhasa. Apso in the Tibetan language means "bearded." Therefore, the dogs are referred to as "long-haired Lhasa dogs." These dogs are very alert and have a keen sense of hearing and therefore, were bred as an interior sentinel in the Buddhist monasteries to alert the monks of intruders.
