February is Black History month and a day set aside within the month to recognize and honor Presidents of the United States. Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president, was born February 12, 1809 and was known to be an animal lover. During his presidency, he kept two goats in the White House named Nanny and Nanko who loved to chew on things. Lincoln's sons, Tad and Willie, would hitch these goats to kitchen chairs and carts so that the goats may pull them throughout the White House.
Elizabeth Keckley, a former slave, purchased her freedom and the freedom of her son from St. Louis. She moved to Washington in 1860 and started an independent business as a seamstress for clients who were the wives of government elites. Her clients included Jefferson Davis' wife, Varina Davis, Robert E. Lee's wife, Mary Anna Custis Lee, and President Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.
In one of Keckley's letters, she wrote about President Lincoln's goats. She implied that President Lincoln though that his pet goats were the kindest and best goats in the world. He boasted of how the goats recognized his voice and how active, fun and happy they were.
